A project for Strategic Planning of Energy Sector of Georgia was conducted through a collaboration of USAID and Ministry of Energy with the USAID contractor IRG involving WEG and Tarosi at the Ministry Support Institutions for the Georgian Planning Team. This collaboration was part of the broader USAID-Hellenic Aid SYNENERGY Program – addressing energy efficiency and renewable energy policy issues in Energy Community countries. WEG led the effort of Georgian specialists to develop a MARKAL based integrated energy planning model for Georgian energy sector. The project helped to develop the local capacity for energy policy analysis and planning, to examine the national and regional implications for energy security, economic growth and the environment of potential investments, technology development and commercialization in energy efficiency and renewable energy, as well as potential for reducing carbon emissions from the energy sector.

The project paralleled the similar work conducted in nine other countries being Contracting Parties and Observers to Athens Energy Community Treaty.
